Calorie Restriction Inhibits Skin Cancer Growth

“A restricted-calorie diet inhibited the development of precancerous growths in a two-step model of skin cancer, reducing the activation of two signaling pathways known to contribute to cancer growth and development, researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center report today at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting.” (Physics.Org)

Epithelial cancers arise in the epithelium – the tissue that lines the surfaces and cavities of the body’s organs. They comprise 80 percent of all cancers.

“Calorie restriction and obesity directly affect activation of the cell surface receptors epidermal growth factor (EGFR) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1R),” Moore said. “These receptors then affect signaling in downstream molecular pathways such as Akt and mTOR.”

“Calorie restriction, which we refer to as negative energy balance, inhibits this signaling, and obesity, or positive energy balance, enhances signaling through these pathways, leading to cell growth, proliferation and survival,” Moore said.

Dietary energy balance refers to the relationship between caloric intake and energy expenditure. Previous research, both experimental and epidemiological, suggests that chronic positive energy balance, which can lead to obesity, increases the risk of developing a variety of cancers, DiGiovanni said, while negative balance often decreases risk.”

Well the research is now conclusive, I have said this before in my eBook, “Sick, Tired & Overweight” but in the light of this latest research it bears repeating. Calorie restricted diets, as long as they are healthy, making sure that you still eat around 1800calories for men and 1500 for women a day and eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and quality protein will save your life. Not just by allowing you to shed some of that excess baggage, and increasing your energy levels, but by inhibiting the growth of cancerous cells.

Be fit. Be Well. Do it online.

Don’t forget the UV protective clothing! Surfers have used rash guard shirts for years but it’s just recently that the SPF 150+ protection these shirts provide while you’re in the water has been discovered by the rest of the beach going population.

As I live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Qld, in Oz, I know all about the sun and surfing, not much better surfing in the world than here.

And wearing protective clothing is better than too much chemical sunscreen, but we also need to remember that now doctors are saying we are covering up too much and we all now have a Vit D deficiency. So get some sun and then cover up…
