When is Body Fat Not Fattening? When it’s Brown

This amazing study has found that not all body fat is created equal, for years we have known that there is WAT or white adipose tissue and BAT brown adipose tissue in our bodies but is only recently that medical researchers are finding out why. It seems that WAT, the fat or adipose tissue that gathers more often on our tummies is tough to get rid of, and don’t we know it!

But, the brown fat is actually FAT-BURNING FAT! Yes you have read this right. Fat that helps you to burn fat!

Now researcher are really excited to announce that they just might have found the protein that turns WAT into BAT, which means wonderful things for all those people out there like me, who have had four children, and have a slow thyroid, and insulin resistance. No matter how fit I am, I have a tummy, now maybe if these researchers can isolate and learn how to use this protein, we might lose the tummy forever!

The Harvard Medical School study appears in the journal Cell Metabolism.

“The surprising thing was that it wasn’t where the fat was located, it was the kind of fat that was the most important variable. (Professor Ronald Khan Harvard Medical School 0

The researchers, who worked on mice, transplanted fat from one part of the animals’ body to the other.

When subcutaneous fat was moved to the abdominal area, there was a decrease in body weight, fat mass, and blood sugar levels.

The animals also became more responsive to the hormone insulin, which controls the way the body uses sugar. A lack of response to insulin is often the first stage on the path to type 2 diabetes.

In contrast, moving abdominal visceral fat to other parts of the body had no effect.

Lead researcher Professor Ronald Khan said: “The surprising thing was that it wasn’t where the fat was located, it was the kind of fat that was the most important variable.

“Even more surprising, it wasn’t that abdominal fat was exerting negative effects, but that subcutaneous fat was producing a good effect.”
