“Walking is the most prevalent and preferred method of physical activity for both work and leisure purposes, making it a prime target for exercise interventions,” says lead author David Williams, Ph.D., a psychologist at the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital. “Based on our review of studies, walking promotion interventions can be effective in helping people initiate regular walking programs, particularly for those motivated to sign up, and certain aspects of these programs may be more successful than others.”

He notes that increased walking on a population level has the potential to significantly decrease the incidence of chronic disease. “While researchers have made great strides in understanding the impact of physical activity on health and wellness, the current challenge is to continue to develop intervention programs that successfully motivate the adoption and maintenance of physical activity,” he says. ” (

I love to walk on the seashore, as I live on the Sunshine Coast with miles of beaches at my fingertips, that’s easy for me. What about you, country roads? mountain trails? the local park? where is your favourite place to walk?

This research certainly proves that no-one has an excuse for being unfit, just take a walk… on a regular basis. Not only will you be fitter and more energetic, you will also benefit from the reduced stress and enhanced calmness that comes from “strolling down the avenue.”

So take a walk, walk with a friend, your dog (he will love you for it), you neighbours dog, your kids (good for them and time to talk and catch-up). How many ways will your family benefit from getting out and taking a regular walk? You could even make it an adventure by going somewhere new once a week, or month?

Just do it and you will feel the difference in so many ways..

I started walking a mile a day last June and have lost 28 pounds! I’m wearing a size 6 again and haven’t felt this good in years. And it turns out it’s not just a physical thing for me but a spiritual one as well. I walk first thing in the morning when all is peaceful on my country road and find it’s the best time to commune with the universe. : )
